Why is My Windows Laptop / PC so Slow?
A slow Windows laptop or PC can be incredibly frustrating to use. Slow boot times, constant loading, freezing and programs taking ages to open can quickly make even simple tasks feel difficult. When experiencing these issues, many people assume their laptop or PC is too old and needs to be replaced. However this is not always the case. In many cases a slow Windows laptop or PC can be sped up with a simple upgrade, tune-up or proper health check.
There are several reasons why a Windows laptop or PC may become slow over time. Some are hardware related, such as using an old hard drive instead of a faster SSD. Others are software related such as full storage, too many startup programs or general system issues. The good news is that many of these problems can be resolved with needing to buy a new laptop or PC.
Not Enough RAM
Random Access Memory (RAM) is one of the most important part of a laptop or PC when it comes to handling everyday tasks. RAM helps your computer run multiple programs at once, so it is important that your device has enough of it. Having several things open at once such as website tabs, Word documents, emails and background apps, can quickly use up your laptop and PC’s available RAM.
When a laptop or PC runs out of available RAM, it has to rely on the storage drive, which is much slower. This can cause the computer to freeze, lag or feel unresponsive. For most people 8GB or 16GB of RAM is usually the right amount for everyday use. Anything less can be extremely limiting especially on modern versions of Windows.
Many laptops and PCs are able to have their RAM upgraded, which can make a big difference to performance. However some laptops have their RAM soldered directly to the motherboard meaning it cannot be directly upgraded.
Using an Old Hard Drive Instead of an SSD
One of the biggest reasons older Windows laptops and PCs feel slow is that they often use hard drives instead of a solid state drives (SSD). Hard drives have moving mechanical parts which means they are unreliable and much slower over time. This affects the speed your laptop or PC can complete tasks such as starting Windows, opening programs and loading files.
An SSD is a much faster option that can make an old laptop or PC feel completely different to use. Start up times are reduced, programs open quicker and the whole laptop or PC feels more responsive. In many cases fitting an SSD is one of the best value upgrades you can do for your Windows laptop or PC.
Software Issues
There are many software issues can cause your Windows laptop or PC to run slowly. One common issue is low storage space. Windows needs free space to function properly, and if the storage in your laptop or PC is nearly full it can become slow and unreliable. Freeing up storage space can help improve performance but in some cases upgrading to a larger SSD may be a better option.
Another common issue is having too many start up programs. Many apps open automatically in the background when you turn on your laptop or PC. These can affect boot times and slow down the device so it is important to disable any that are not needed.
Viruses, malware and unwanted software can also cause your laptop or PC to run slowly. A proper health check can help identify suspicious software, remove unwanted programs, free up space and improve all the overall performance of your device.
Overheating Issues
When laptops and PCs get too hot they slow themselves down to protect the internal components from damage. This is known as thermal throttling. Dust can easily build up inside laptops and PCs over time, this blocks vents and affects airflow. If air cannot flow properly through the system heat builds up and the device my overheat which can lead to slower performance.
Having your laptop or PC properly cleaned out and replacing the thermal paste can help your device run cooler and more efficiently.
In conclusion, a slow Windows laptop or PC does not always need replacing. In many cases a RAM upgrade, SSD upgrade, tune-up or internal clean can make a big difference to the performance of your device. However in some cases some older laptops and PCs may not be worth upgrading and replacing them my be the best option.
If you are unsure what is causing your laptop or PC to run slowly it is worth getting it checked before spending money on a replacement. In some cases there may be a cheaper alternative. A quick assessment can help you decide whether an upgrade, repair or replacement is the best option.
